Student Objectives/Student Outcomes:
- Students will have the opportunity to help and teach their peers as review about Lord of the Flies.
- Students will have an opportunity to ask questions to further their own understanding as it pertains to Lord of the Flies.
- Students will have a chance to begin reviewing for their upcoming test.
- Students will practice their in-class discussion skills.
- Students will practice their in-class note taking skills.
- Students will gain a greater understanding of the difference between an opinion and an opinion with textual evidence to back it up.
Content Standards:
- 1.A.4a Expand knowledge of word origins and derivations and use idioms, analogies, metaphors and similes to extend vocabulary development.
- 1.B.4a Preview reading materials, clarify meaning, analyze overall themes and coherence, and relate reading with information from other sources.

- Study guide/guided notes chart
- 15 min.
- Start of Class: Students will briefly study their stems while I take attendance. I will ask students to put everything except for a black or blue pen. I will pass out the stems quiz. After they finish the quiz, they will pick up and begin to cut out the flashcards for the new list.
- 5 min.
- Introduction of Lesson: I will explain that we will be doing further review for their upcoming Lord of the Flies test. I will ask students to get out their books and study guide/guided notes chart, as well as a blank piece of paper for notes.
- 20 min.
- Lesson Instruction: I will use the PowerPoint presentation I prepared to help guide the students through symbolism, metaphor, and how to find and use textual evidence. For each topic, I will first ask the students for the definition of the term. I will then ask them to find examples of and evidence for symbols and metaphors in the book. I will fill in any holes in the students’ definitions, examples, and/or explanations.
- Throughout and after class
- Assessments/Checks for Understanding: I will be able to check for students’ understanding by observing and listening to their thought and action processes as they try to use the text to support their views. Ultimately, I will also be able to check for understanding as I read through their tests.
- 10 min.
- Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: I will ask students if they have any additional concerns or questions about the book or test itself. I will remind them that their test will be on Wednesday.
- After class
- Self-Assessment (optional): I will reflect with Mr. N. about the successes and shortcomings of my lesson plan and PowerPoint.

- Lesson Instruction: I will continue to use the PowerPoint presentation I prepared
to help guide the students through symbolism, metaphor, how to find and use
textual evidence, and finally, how to develop a stance on an issue.
- I will then ask students to briefly review the examples of and evidence for symbols and metaphors in the book we discussed in class on Monday.
- I will fill in any holes in the students’ definitions, examples, and/or explanations.
- We will then begin to talk about how to develop a stance on an issue and find and use evidence from the text to support their opinion.
- Throughout and after class.
- Assessments/Checks for Understanding: I will be able to check for students’ understanding by observing and listening to their thought and action processes as they try to use the text to support their views. Ultimately, I will also be able to check for understanding as I read through their tests.
